The Big Picture: Research in the K-lab

The general research objective in our lab is to understand the neural and physiological systems that promote adaptation: those processes that the brain and body use to protect us from harm and adapt to changes in the environment.

The brain and body work together to govern a host of behavioral and physiological processes that are in a delicate balance -- a balance that when disturbed can make an individual more susceptible to environmental challenges (e.g. psychological/physical stress or disease). We study these systems in both the brain and periphery.

Biological

Rhythms

How does the brain control rhythms throughout the body?

Stress

How do the brain and body adapt to environmental challenge?

Immunology

What is the role of the circadian clock in immune function?

Metabolism

How do circadian and stress systems modulate metabolism and contribute to obesity?
