We are hiring again! The laboratory of Dr. Ilia Karatsoreos at the University of Massachusetts – Amherst, has new openings for one or two postdoctoral positions for NIH and Keck-funded research programs. We are specifically welcoming applications from highly motivated individuals with interest in one or more of the following basic research areas: chronobiology, metabolism/obesity, neurobiology and physiology of stress, neuroimmunology, or sleep. The positions will have guaranteed funding for at least two years, with the expectation that the incumbent will apply for extramural support.
The Karatsoreos lab uses a wide array of techniques to investigate the mechanisms by which organisms adapt to environmental disruptions, with the goal of understanding both successful and unsuccessful adaptation. We use the circadian timing system and the stress response system as models to these ends, undertaking studies at all levels of analysis from cell/molecular assays, electrophysiology (EEG and slice), tissue assays (in brain and periphery), and whole animal approaches (metabolic function, behavioral assays). The Karatsoreos lab has moved into brand new, purpose built, neuroscience laboratories, with state-of-the-art instrumentation for all levels of biological and behavioral analyses. The Initiative on Neuroscience (IoNS) at UMass has led to a rapid growth in the community of neuroscientists, and the exciting collaborative atmosphere is exceptional. In addition to collaborations with the neuroscience community, as part of the Institute for Applied Life Sciences (http://www.umass.edu/ials/), the lab has access to an incredibly array of cutting-edge instruments and approaches, and an unmatched group of experts in their application.

Recent Ph.D. in neurobiology, physiology or another relevant field (e.g., chemistry, biology, psychology), evidence of strong background and research productivity in a relevant field, and excellent writing skills. Small rodent behavioral testing, and surgery experience is essential. Experience with fiber photometry, slice and/or in vivo electrophysiology, or in vivo calcium imaging is desirable. It is also hoped that the candidate be proficient in MatLab, R, and/or Python.
